Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s new cooling system has been tested to see if it outperforms the iPhone 16 Pro Max and OnePlus 13.
If we had to pick the biggest upgrade in the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, it would be the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, without a doubt.
This marks the first time a 3nm chip has been featured in an Android flagship, raising expectations to new heights.
However, with all that added power, Samsung faces a significant challenge: effectively cooling the processor to prevent overheating.
To tackle this, Samsung has equipped the S25 Ultra with a vapor chamber that’s 40% larger than the one in the Samsung S24 Ultra. But is that enough? Let’s find out.
GPU Pressure Test
We used the popular 3D Mark benchmark, specifically the Wildlife Extreme Stress Test, to evaluate performance.
Unlike other gaming benchmarks that only show initial performance, this test runs for 20 minutes, revealing how the chip’s performance changes as it heats up. This provides a more realistic view of the device’s capabilities.
While the Samsung S25 Ultra starts strong, hitting around 6,200 points and surpassing rivals like the iPhone 16 Pro Max, its performance drops significantly after just three or four minutes due to thermal throttling.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 3D: Mark Initial Score
In fact, the performance line levels off at around 3,000 points, which is about half of the initial score. This drop is definitely disappointing, especially given the high expectations for the new chipset.
The rival OnePlus 13, which also uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, has a similar initial score. However, its performance line flattens at a much higher score of nearly 4,500 points—50% higher sustained performance compared to the Galaxy S25 Ultra!
Samsung Galaxy Galaxy S25 Ultra’s lowest score in the 3D Mark test highlights significant throttling issues, with performance dropping sharply after just a few minutes of use.
There are two possible explanations for this issue. First, the vapor chamber cooling system on the Galaxy S25 Ultra may not be sufficient. Second, Samsung could be using more aggressive software limits to prevent the chip from overheating.
S 25 Ultra Oneplus 13 Iphone 16 Pro Max
At its current state, the S25 Ultra barely outperforms the previous-generation S24 Ultra in terms of prolonged performance.
Additionally, it has the lowest “stability” score, meaning its performance drops the most from the initial run to the lowest scoring one.
Oneplus Is Winner Of The Performance Competition.
Interestingly, the OnePlus 13 is currently leading the performance race.
Despite both the OnePlus 13 and Galaxy S25 Ultra using the same processor, the OnePlus 13 significantly outperforms the S25 Ultra in sustained gaming performance. This is even more impressive considering the OnePlus 13 is technically using a slower version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra is advertised to have an overclocked variant of the chip.
We will continue investigating and running further tests to dig deeper into this.
