The Xiaomi Sound Outdoor Speaker is the brand’s newest portable Bluetooth speaker. It boasts a 30W output, a dual-driver design, and IP67 protection. Additionally, it offers the impressive capability of pairing with up to 100 speakers simultaneously.

The Sound Outdoor follows the classic portable Bluetooth speaker design, featuring a tubular shape. Its exterior is predominantly covered in fabric, with a rubber strip on the back that forms a convenient loop. The black version shown here has a contrasting orange loop, while the red and blue models have matching loops in their respective colors.
On the front, the Sound Outdoor is equipped with two active drivers: a 20W woofer and a 10W mid-range driver. Additionally, two passive radiators are positioned at either end of the tube, working alongside the woofer to enhance the low frequencies.

On the back of the unit, you’ll find three buttons for power, pairing, and syncing with other speakers. A flap covers the USB-C port used for charging. Notably, the Sound Outdoor lacks an audio jack for wired audio input and functions solely with Bluetooth.
The speaker supports Bluetooth 5.4 with SBC, but there is no NFC, meaning pairing must be done manually. A standout feature of the Sound Outdoor is its ability to pair with up to 99 other units of the same model, allowing up to 100 speakers to play in unison. While I didn’t have 99 speakers for testing, I witnessed a Xiaomi demo where four speakers were paired across the room, playing in perfect sync. Additionally, you can pair two speakers for stereo sound.

The Sound Outdoor performs well as a party speaker for indoor use. The woofer and passive radiators generate a surprising amount of air movement, delivering a powerful, punchy sound that can reach high volumes without distortion, even with just one speaker.
However, when used outdoors, the speaker loses some of its bass response, resulting in a flatter sound overall.
For critical listening, the speaker has a few drawbacks. It requires careful placement, as the bass is enhanced when positioned near a wall or corner, and at a certain distance from the listener. Additionally, the mids and highs are quite directional—if the speaker isn’t facing you directly, much of the clarity is lost. The highs, in particular, are somewhat dull due to the absence of a dedicated tweeter.

The speaker is mono, which is expected, though some Bluetooth speakers of this form factor have featured a stereo configuration. The mono setup can cause music to sound quieter than it should, as the wide stereo imaging is compressed into a single channel. If stereo sound is important to you, you may want to consider purchasing a second unit.
When tested with a single unit, the Sound Outdoor offers good latency performance, keeping audio in sync with video across various sources. However, latency with multiple paired units wasn’t tested, so video synchronization is likely compromised when using multiple speakers together.

The Sound Outdoor also features a microphone for calls, but its quality is disappointing. During testing, the audio was barely audible, even when shouted into the speaker, and it sounded garbled. As such, this speaker should not be used for voice calls.
Xiaomi claims the Sound Outdoor offers a battery life of 12 hours at 50% volume, which is typical for devices of this size and category. The speaker takes about 2.5 hours to charge with a 15W or higher charger. Additionally, charging is one-way, meaning the speaker cannot be used as a power bank to charge other devices.

Overall, the Xiaomi Sound Outdoor Speaker delivers solid performance at an affordable price. Priced at INR 3,999, it is half the cost of competing products from brands like JBL and Sony, while offering similar quality. If NFC or aux input aren’t a priority for you, the Sound Outdoor is an excellent choice.
